Sharing My Journey in Construction and Education

About Me

Kirk Bingenheimer

I am a Lecturer in the Nieri Department of Construction and Real Estate Development at Clemson University, where I blend over three decades of residential construction industry experience with a deep commitment to transforming construction education for the challenges of the 21st century.

My professional journey has spanned purchasing systems, negotiations, estimating, product development, and pre-construction leadership — all rooted in pragmatic problem-solving and a drive for efficiency. Over the years, I have partnered with national account representatives and local trade professionals to streamline processes, implement value engineering strategies, and foster durable, collaborative relationships that deliver measurable results.

At Clemson, my teaching philosophy centers on experiential, project-based learning that bridges academic theory and real-world practice. I design and lead courses that immerse students in applied challenges — from materials and methods fundamentals to complex project planning — always with an emphasis on human-centered problem solving, community impact, and industry relevance.

I am proud to have developed and led the two-semester Creative Inquiry in Building Affordable Housing sequence, where students engage directly with partners such as Habitat for Humanity and local stakeholders to plan, budget, and construct homes that address real community needs. This experiential learning model not only builds construction competencies but cultivates empathy, leadership, and civic engagement.

My scholarly work reflects my interest in rethinking how we teach and learn in construction disciplines. My recent book, Rethinking Construction Education, explores innovative pedagogies and educational models that prepare graduates to navigate emerging industry demands, technological evolution, and social challenges such as housing affordability.

In every class and project, I strive to equip students with the technical skills, strategic thinking, and reflective capacity they need to become inventive leaders in a changing built-environment landscape.
